The system was developed by Kaoru Ishikawa in the 1950s; it is one of the tools of the Lean philosophy; that helps in building the culture of discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At the time the 5S program was created, Japan was in a crisis, so business efficiency was critical. It was necessary to reduce costs and increase productivity to help the country grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The philosophy seeks to promote, through everyone's awareness and responsibility: discipline, safety and productivity in the workplace. Ishikawa devised a system based on five pillars and each of the five words represents a stage of the 5S implementation program that can also be called the five \u201csenses\u201d: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"88\" height=\"116\" src=\"https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1Picture-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1Picture-1.jpg 88w, https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1Picture-1-9x12.jpg 9w, https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1Picture-1-38x50.jpg 38w, https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1Picture-1-57x75.jpg 57w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 88px) 100vw, 88px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li class=\" translation-block\">Seri (Sense of use): refers to avoiding what is unnecessary, or the \u201csense of use\u201d. It separates what is really necessary for the work from what is superfluous or unnecessary, passing it on to others who can make use of it or simply discarding it, thus improving the arrangement, making room for the new. By prioritizing only what is needed, the organization is expected to achieve:<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>have more free spaces;<\/li><li>facilitate the movement of people and products;<\/li><li>give more visibility to important materials;<\/li><li>increase employee comfort and safety;<\/li><li>speed up cleaning of the environment;<\/li><li>reduce waste and costs;<\/li><li>stimulate productivity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"89\" height=\"114\" src=\"https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2Picture.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2Picture.jpg 89w, https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2Picture-9x12.jpg 9w, https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2Picture-39x50.jpg 39w, https:\/\/loggikka.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2Picture-59x75.jpg 59w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 89px) 100vw, 89px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size translation-block\">2. Seiton (Sense of Organization): means keeping everything in order, or the \u201csense of organization\u201d. It literally means tidying everything up, leaving everything in its place so you can easily find it whenever you need it, thus avoiding wasting time and energy. A sense of organization brings the idea that everything has its own place and that all objects are stored in the correct spaces. SEISO (Sense of cleanliness): means to keep clean, or the \u201csense of cleanliness\u201d. Once you have removed everything that was unnecessary and left everything in order, you have to keep it that way. The sense of cleanliness should generate a collective spirit in employees, as everyone is responsible for keeping the company clean. As a result, there will be a greater effort not to dirty the environment. Seiketsu (Sense of Standardization): care for health and hygiene or \u201csense of health and hygiene\u201d. In addition to keeping the workplace clean, personal hygiene must also be taken care of. Standardization is fundamental for quality control and generates countless benefits for the organization. Shitsuke (Sense of Discipline): Discipline: This concept is a little broader than the meaning we are used to following the rules. It also refers to the character of the individual who should be honorable, educated and maintain good habits. In addition to the constant improvement of processes, Shitsuke generates other gains for the organization, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><li>increases the feeling of responsibility among everyone;<\/li><li>allows to expand the autonomy given to employees;<\/li><li>reduces errors, rework and delivery delays;<\/li><li>enables the execution of planning;<\/li><li>raises quality in general;<\/li><li>favors the professional development of workers;<\/li><li>improves analytical skills about the organization and its processes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">For logistics these are unwritten codes of moral principles that boil down to optimization, organization, cleanliness, discipline and harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">To successfully use the 5S method, the manager can use several strategies. In other words, the processes need to be thought of within the system's logic. You can also create visual dissemination materials about the 5S Program, such as folders or posters.
